A

My passion started decades ago as a kid on a flight to India. I was attracted by how such a large airplane was able to glide smoothly above the clouds. I made it a goal to become a pilot. I am now a pilot for American Airlines. Though being a pilot consumes my life,it is a job worth doing.

My job is slightly different compared to that of a typical pilot. Most pilots have their routes they fly. They are then familiar with the routes. However, in my case, I participate in any job where a pilot is immediately required. It is true that some days I might have a workday from nine in the morning to five in the afternoon. In fact, some days, I might even begin my work at three in the morning when I am needed to fly. Sometimes, as for the typical day, I do not have one.

Having been on the job for over two decades, I have learned some important life lessons. As I greet passengers boarding the airplane, I realize I, along with other airline pilots, have improved the lives of those who we are serving. In fact, there is one particular experience that I will never forget. A family was walking in from the gate, explaining that their beloved one was ill and had to be taken to a big hospital in another city  immediately. It was at this point that I realized just how important my job was.

Therefore, my life as an airline pilot is definitely not for everyone. However, my job is something I enjoy thoroughly and will continue to do till I am old enough. As a pilot, I have been able to experience so many different types of situations in different places throughout the world. For anyone interested in piloting, I would recommend going for it.

21.The author dreamed of being a pilot when _______.

Riding a London subway, a person from China will notice one major difference in London,  people do not look at each other. In fact, eye contact is avoided at all times. That’s not rudeness—people are just too busy to bother looking.

Busy doing what, you ask? Well, they’re certainly not using the time for a moment of quiet reflection, nor are they reading a book. New technology has replaced quiet habits. Today the only acceptable form of book on the London underground is an e-book.

Apple must earn a fortune from London commuters(通勤者). Since the launch of the iPhone in 2007, over 40,000—yes, that’s 40,000—“apps” (programs downloaded for the iPhone) have been designed.

Commuters love them because they are the perfect time-fillers. One “app”, called iShoot, is a game that features tanks. Another one, Tube Exits, tells passengers where to sit on the train to be closest to the exit of their destination. ISteam clouds the iPhone screen when you breathe into the microphone. You can then write in the “ steam” on your phone screen.

For those without an iPhone, another Apple product, the iPod, may be another choice. It’s not just teenagers who “plug in” to their music—iPods are a popular way to pass the time for all ages.

And if games, e-books and music aren’t enough to keep you engaged, then perhaps you would prefer a film. The development of palm DVD technology means many commuters watch their favorite TV show or film on the way to work. With all these entertainments, it’s amazing that people still remember to get off the train.

28.People in London do not make eye contact on the subway because they are busy_____.

A.playing games, reading e-books, listening to music or watching films.

B.going to work

C.reading books

D.thinking about private things

29.Those who like war games can download _____to their iPhones.

A.Tube Exits

B.iShoot

C.ISteam

D.iPod

30.The underlined word “engaged” in the last paragraph probably means______.

A.delighted

B.busy

C.controlled

D.amused

31.The article tells us that_____.

A.London commuters are unfriendly to strangers

B.Apple has earned a lot of money from selling 40, 000 iPhones

C.with all the new time-fillers, London commuters often forget to get off the train

D.technology is changing the way London commuters spend their traveling time

Want to improve your life? Then do something awesome.

According to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal, researchers have found that awe-inspiring experiences improve our behaviors, making us more generous and modest. Awe-inspiring experiences make us more sympathetic, allowing us to recognize another person's emotional expressions better and respond with concern. And they make us more willing to engage with trust and connect with others.

What kind of experiences can be called“awe-inspiring”? The examples mentioned by the journal include witnessing the birth of a child, watching a meteor shower(流星雨)and visiting a forest. A man said he found it awe-inspiring to work with homeless people and witness their courage and kindness. Awe is an emotional response to something very large, says the article, and it challenges and expands our way of seeing the world.

But the feeling of awe is felt differently by different individuals, and for different reasons. The deep blue ocean might inspire different feelings in a poet than in a fisherman, for example.

According to an article in The Atlantic, a 2012 study from Stanford University investigated several aspects of awe and came to an interesting conclusion: the feeling of awe changes the way you think about time. The study says an awe-inspiring experience is a moment so overwhelming(difficult to resist) that time seems to stand still. When you look at or experience something awesome, like looking at a waterfall or a sky filled with stars, your mind is fixed on the present moment. Time seems to slow down, the Stanford researchers concluded, making you feel like you have more of it to spare. This makes you feel more patient, less materialistic, and more willing to help others.

32.What does the writer advocate in the text?

A.Making time stand still.

B.Watching a meteor shower.

C.Being fixed on the present moment.

D.Having awe-inspiring experience.

33.What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph probably refer to?

A.Time.

B.Money.

C.Effort.

D.Patience.

34.What does the text mainly talk about?

A.Aweinspiring experiences' effect.

B.Making full use of our time.

C.Doing something strange to people.

D.A person's awe-inspiring experience.

35.The text is mainly developed

A.by comparison

B.by example

C.by time

D.by classification

If something that you're doing doesn't challenge you, then it doesn't change you.We all need some normal stress in our lives, after all.     36    . So challenge the following

limits:

Figure out what you're scared of and do it continuously.

If you're a salesman, and you're scared of talking to people personally or over the phone, now, instead of being scared and thinking you'll fail, spend at least five minutes a day to pick up the phone and make a call.    37    . But don' t stop on the first try! Eventually, you can look at fear in the eyes and say, " Go on, I'm not scared!"        38        .

Make sure this hobby is not linked to your career; you have to relax and relieve your stress while performing this. Some examples might be cooking, sewing, painting and so on. Apart from helping you challenge yourself, taking a class for your hobby may also give you extra income.

Set aside at least nine minutes a day for physical exercise.          39    . A simple 9-minute run around your neighborhood can do wonders for yourself. Exercise can not only help you maintain your regular weight, but also make you feel better about yourself.

Travel and allow yourself to be interested in new people.

Don't just limit yourself to your fellow travelers—try to connect with the service staff. You never know what kind of people they're going to be. Get out of your house or go online right now to book your class.     40

A. You should do it continuously.

B. Someone may hang up on you.

C. You don't need to go to the gym.

D. Running in the gym may be a better choice.

E. Start to travel now and learn to challenge yourself.

F. Take a class for a hobby you've been wanting to develop.

G. You can never see any improvement if you stick to your comfort zone.
