Ireland,Japan,China scientists share the 2015 Nobel Prize for medicine.William Campbell,Satoshi Omura and Tu Youyou jointly won the prize for their work against diseases, the award-giving body said on Monday.

Tu Youyou, a scientist at the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, has no postgraduate degree. She has never studied or done research abroad. She is neither a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences nor the Chinese Academy of Engineering. However, the 81-year-old pharmacologist has become the first scientist on the Chinese mainland to win a Lasker Award, the medical prize of the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation.

The Lasker Awards have existed since 1945. Tu was presented the 2011 Lasker Clinical Medical Research Award on September 23. She discovered a drug called artemisinin . The drug is now widely used against malaria .

Tu and her colleagues joined a government project to find a new malaria drug in the late 1960s during the "cultural revolution" (1966-76). They made 380 herbal extracts from 200 potential recipes. The recipes came from traditional Chinese medical books. The team then tested them on malaria-infected mice. Finally Tu became interested in an extract of the plant qinghao, or sweet wormwood .

According to an ancient Chinese medicine book, qinghao was once used to treat malaria. However, the extract they made in the lab didn't work well. Maybe, thought Tu, the effective ingredient in qinghao was destroyed by high temperatures. Therefore, Tu tried to make the extract with an ether which has a much lower boiling point than water.

In 1971, after more than 190 failures, Tu finally got an extract that was 100 percent effective against the malaria parasites .The extract was called qinghaosu, later renamed artemisinin.

According to a statement on the Lasker Foundation website, during the past four decades, Tu's drug has saved millions of lives. It is especially important for children in the poorest and least developed parts of the world. However, not many people knew of the scientist until she won the Lasker Award this month.

Lasker Awards are known as "America's Nobels" for the reason that in the last two decades, 28 Lasker Prize winners have gone on to receive the Nobel Prize, and 80 since 1945, according to Xinhua News Agency.

" The discovery of artemisinin is a gift to mankind from traditional Chinese medicine," Tu said when she received the a-ward. "Continuous exploration and development of traditional medicine will, without doubt, bring more medicines to the world.

25. What can we infer from the second paragraph?

26. In the process of discovering artemisinin, Tu _________.

27. Why is artemisinin especially important for children from poor countries?

28. According to the article, the Lasker Awards _________.

With brown curly hair and a pair of glasses, 19-year-old Nicholas Allegra from New York state, US, looks like a real-life Harry Potter. However, rather than waving a wand, Nicholas is a "wizard " at "jailbreaking ". This is probably why he ended up with an internship at Apple, a job many of his fellow Brown University students dream of.

Jailbreaking is the process of removing the limitations set by Apple on devices with the iOS operating system. These devices include the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. It allows users to gain full access to the operating system and download additional materials that are unavailable through the official Apple App Store. However, it is estimated that Apple loses $100 million (640million yuan) from jailbreaking each year.

Nicholas, with a famous nickname "Comex", is the teenage hacker behind the jail-

breaking site JailbreakMe. com. The site tells users how to unlock their iPhones using software that is not approved by Apple. The jailbreaking software he made has been downloaded millions of times by users around the world.

Then Forbes magazine suggested in an article that Apple's security team might need him as a new intern. It seems that they do. Little more than a day after Steve jobs stepped down as CEO, Apple welcomed Nicholas Allegra. Nicholas wrote on his Twitter on August 26 that " It's been really, really fun, but it's also been a while and I've been getting bored. So, the week after next I will be starting an internship with Apple.

Apple is not the only company embracing the skills of hackers. Facebook recently hired iPhone jailbreaker George "Geohot" Hotz as a full-time employee.

However, there are still hot debates about whether employing hackers is a wise solution. The word "hacker" has always had a double meaning. In the press, "hacker" means someone who breaks into computers. They steal from people's bank accounts, download sensitive information and attack legal websites. Among computer lovers, it means a cool programmer who can make a computer do whatever he wants.

Hiring a hacker does have its advantages. A talented hacker is probably quite capable of finding problems and suggesting corrections. On the other hand, because of a hacker's former behavior, many people doubt their morals .Can the company trust them with its valuable assets ? And can someone who is so used to working alone in the dark fit into a new role within a company?

One thing is for sure- Comex isn't the first member of the hacker community to land the job of his dreams. It's likely that he won't be the last.

29. What did Nicolas Allegra do before working for Apple?

30. According to the article, jailbreaking _______.

31. The underlined word "embracing" in Paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to

32. Some people think it unwise to hire hackers because they _______.

When it comes to cultural heritage protection, the Grand Canal of China is probably the world’s greatest project of its kind. The big inland waterway system in the north-eastern and central eastern plains passes through eight of the country’s present-day provinces.

The Canal runs from Beijing in the north to Zhejiang Province in the south. Constructed in sections from the 5th century BC onwards, it was designed as a means of communication in the 7th century AD. The Canal is the world’s greatest civil engineering project before the Industrial Revolution.

The Grand Canal reached a peak in the 13th century, providing an inland navigation(航行) network consisting of more than 2,000 kilometers of artificial waterways, linking five of the most important river basins in China, including the Yellow River and the Yangtze. It entered a bid as a UNESCO(联合国教科文组织) cultural heritage site in 2008.

The Grand Canal cultural square is located in Beijing’s Tongzhou district. Ever since the Yuan dynasty 800 years ago, the Tongzhou section of the Grand Canal has been the life blood of Beijing. Grain and building materials were all transported to meet the endless demands of the big cities. Even today, the Grand Canal plays a major role in the lives of its citizens.

"I grew up near the Grand Canal. In the past the waterway was a lot narrower, but now it’s nice and wide and bridges are built over it. I think if the bid for world heritage status succeeds, it will greatly make Tongzhou more famous in the world, especially with Tongzhou aiming to be a sub-center of the capital Beijing," a citizen said.

The result of the bid is set to be released next week, and no doubt it will certainly make it into the history books if the Canal is listed as a world heritage site.

33.It can be concluded from the passage that ________ .

34.The Grand Canal was in the most glorious time ________ .
