I felt like a good mother on that summer morning. I’d   up early, made a picnic lunch,  my three-and five-year-old daughters into the car, driven to my friend’s house, packed her and her  into the car, and driven the hour and a half to the shore where we our towels on the sands by 10 a.m.Soon the girls began running. About 50 yards from us, a man, maybe  his late 50s, was fishing. The girls stood next to him and watched with their mouths open he cast the lines. He smiled at them. They all ran back to us except my three-year-old Drew, who, , just seated herself next to the white bucket where the man was planning to put the fish he caught. However, suddenly a  came to my mind. Is it dangerous for Drew to stay there with the stranger? Good moms should also teach daughters that the world is dangerous. Then, I watched them like there was a hidden in the lifeguard chair filming the man as America’s Most Wanted. Every few minutes, I looked to my five-year-old to make sure she hadn’t been  out to sea, then back to Drew to make sure there was no  between her and the stranger. When I looked at Drew again, she had started with the man. She was probably telling him where we lived and how her father was away on  . He nodded. She kept talking. He nodded again, then they laughed. A few seconds later, she ran back to us, with a toy fish in her hand. It must have been something  he used for bait(饵). The three other girls were , so they didn’t try to how eager they were to have one.Just when I was at a loss, there he was: the man, standing right next to us. He was holding three more toy fish. He handed them to each of the girls. By their , I realized that he was a warm-hearted man, meaning no harm at all.“Thank you”, I said, realizing that yes, there is evil in this world…but there is also good, and  in strangers, and lessons for mothers to learn that only three-year-olds could teach them.

I never make resolutions (important decisions made on important occasions). Every December 31st, at the stroke of midnight, my mind usually wanders from the resolution-making task and is more concerned with why I am not at a fantastic party, wearing an evening dress, and talking to a gentleman.

I mean, will all of my photos consist of New Year’s Eves, one after another, with me in my sweater, eating leftovers? All I want is one, just one, fantastic picture to hang on my wall so all the world can see what an exciting and enviable life I lead. Is that too much to ask?

One year, all of this depressing thought got me to think a lot. Why did I feel the pressure to have a perfect New Year Eve? Why did I care? Probably the same reason I felt like I should be settled in a career and married with three kids already. Throughout most of my life, I had been far from the normal; somehow, I still felt it necessary to make apologies.

But why? Where was this desperate need to please coming from? I had travelled the world, owned my own business, bought my first house, and started fulfilling my dream of writing, all before the age of 25. So what did I have to apologize for? Well, as previously stated, I was still single and unsettled about my career, which for a woman of my age was not considered “the normal”.

Then, suddenly, as I was about to celebrate the new year by doing some laundry, an insight shone down from the heavens. It was a lightning of realization. For my first resolution, I was going to decide not to care. Not to care about anyone else’s expectation but my own and to make no apologies for it. After all, I had gone wherever the road had taken me, and it had taken me to a lot of fantastic places, places I would have never been able to go if I had “settled down” already. Not to mention, I had probably be starring in Desperate Housewives.

And as far as my career went, being unsettled was just being honest. I couldn’t change who I was just because I didn’t fit into the social norm. At least I wasn’t going to watch my life go by as I punched the clock at a job I hated. Just to climb an uninteresting ladder for a higher position? No, thanks! If I didn’t try out my options, I would never discover my passions. And don’t we all want to do something we feel crazy about?

Of course, there were all great thoughts, but actually combining them into my everyday thinking process would be a whole other story…So, was I able to rise to the challenge of my first resolution?

Well, let’s just say that I have made the choice to be okay. Okay with my singlehood and my ever-changing career path, and okay that others might not be okay with it. I think that is the most important. And every New Year’s Eve, I make sure to clear my schedule, dress up in my ugliest sweater, eat some delicious leftovers and relaxed with my cat. Then as I tune in to watch the rest of the world create a perfect New Year’s Eve, I glance at the photos on my own wall and think, “What a beautiful year it has been!”

41. According to Paragraph 2, the writer expects to ______.

42. According to the text, ______ was once a great concern for the writer.

43. Based on the passage, what would most probably be the writer’s final resolution?

44. The last two paragraphs implies that challenging as the goal is, the writer will______.

This coming year promises to be an exciting one for technology and science. There is already a line-up of great new gadget(小玩意). We have chosen four for you.

No. 1 The Air Board 1.0 is a fantastic new way to get around. If you are tired of walking, or just want to get somewhere at a relaxed pace, then the Air Board 1.0 is for you. The board works when you step onto the pressure pads. These can read the weight and the movement of the rider. If you want to turn, all you have to do is move your weight to the left or right and the board will do the rest. It is very quick and easy. According to the official website, the power will last for about ten miles(16 km). It can travel at the speed of 10 miles an hour and it takes one hour to be fully charged.

No. 2 Do you enjoy using herbs and spices(香料) when cooking? Then this little gadget, inspired by NASA space technology, might be for you. It makes sure that you always have fresh and well-grown herbs or plants when and where you need them. The Click & Grow is designed to be small and efficient so it can fit on your countertop(厨房操作台). It is self-watering, it checks itself and it also has a LED grown light that makes sure the plants grow fast, strong, and healthy. For those interested, to use this gadget, all you need to do is place the plant box in, fill it up with water and plug it in. Simple, right? So instead of digging through the garden mud for your herbs, why don’t you make them in the control of your own kitchen?

No. 3 The Miito gadget is perfect for all homes, and especially those who like to care for the environment. Miito has been called “the kettle of the future” by the Gadget Flow platform for its futuristic ideas and design. The Miito kettle is designed to heat up the water in any container. For example, if you need a cup of water, you would fill the cup with the right amount of water and place it onto the kettle. After placing the rod into the water, the rod would heat up and so would the water. Though it can’t heat anything made of iron, the Miito’s design and unique method of heating don’t only save water. They also save electricity.

No. 4 Have you ever wished you could walk through the worlds of your games, seeing things as your characters would? Well now, you can. The Rift released by Oculus VR is the latest and greatest in gaming technology so far. Designed by American Palmer Luckey, 23, this clever head set allows you to see the worlds of your games in 3-D. Although you might need to upgrade your computer to get the full gaming experience with the Rift, it’s the next step in virtual reality and it’s improving the way we can play games. Alongside the Oculus headset, the teams are working on creating a controller named Oculus. The Oculus Rift has been designed so that players can’t only see, but also play in, 3-D worlds.

46. It will take you ______ to get to your school (2.5 miles away) on a fully-charged Air Board 1.0.

47. No. 2 can be sorted as a ______ gadget.

48. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?

49. Where is the text most probably from?

In February, 2015, a South Korean woman was sleeping on the floor when her robot vacuum(吸尘器) ate her hair, forcing her to call for emergency help. It surely isn’t what Stephen Hawking warned us that intelligent devices “mean the end of the human race”. But it does highlight one of the unexpected dangers of inviting robots into our home.

There are many examples of intelligent technology going bad, but more often than not, they involve cheating rather than physical danger.

Meanwhile, increasing evidence suggests that we , especially children, tend to tell our deepest, darkest secrets to human robots. So how do we protect ourselves from giving-away code?

Once you’ve invited a robot into your home, you need to manage your expectations. Movies and marketing may have told us to expect deep interaction with robots friends but we’ve still got a long way to go before they are as socially aware as described. Given the gulf between expectation and reality, it’s important to avoid being tricked.

The message is clear: as robots became increasingly connected to the internet, and able to respond to natural language, you need to especially cautious about figuring out who or what you are talking about.

We also need to think about how information is being stored and shared when it comes to robots that can record our every move. Some recording devices may have been designed for entertainment but can easily be adapted for more dangerous purposes. Take Nixie, the wearable camera that can fly off your wrist at a moment’s notice and take shots around you in the air. It doesn’t take much imagination to see how such technology could be taken advantage of.

Most people protect their secrets in the presence of a recording device. But what happens once we get used to a robot around the house, answering every instruction and call? We may be at risk of letting our guard down, treating them as extended member of our family. If the technology around us is able to record and process speech, images and movement, or listen secretly to us, what will happen to that information? Where will it be stored? Who will have access? If our internet history can be a mirror, these details could be worth their gold weight to advertisement company. If we grow accustomed to having trustworthy robots getting into our daily lives, our words and deeds could easily become over-exposed.

So, what is the safest way to welcome robots into our homes, public spaces, and social lives? We should be cautiously optimistic that intelligent machines could become enriching companions, while acknowledging that we need to determine strict boundaries for robots.

We might think of expanding the reach of consumer protection agencies or creating new robot-centered policies. Advances in robots may call for a body responsible for the combination of robots with society. There should be someone to turn to should your robot commit a crime, steal your card… or try to eat your hair.

50. The hair-eating story in Paragraph 1 is intended to _______.

51. According to the writer, it is wise to ________.

52. The last two paragraphs are mainly about _______.

53. The underlined word body in last paragraph is closest in meaning to _______.

54. The writer’s attitude to our over-trusting robots can best be described as ______.

And then I made it. The pencil moved. I moved it up on to its point, and it balanced there in the air, just as if some magical hand was around it, which, in a sense, it was.

“MY GOD!” Eggy gasped. I wanted to “tell” her, “Don’t worry, Eggy, don’t be afraid”, but I had no thoughts to spare. Everything of me was concentrated on that pencil, on holding it upright in the air, and on making the pencil moving towards the paper.

Eggy remained in her chair, just waiting, waiting to see.

She didn’t scream, she didn’t run, she didn’t shout for Mum and Dad, she just sat there, watching as the pencil began to move towards the paper. And as it did, she said, “Harry? Harry? Is it you?”

I moved the pencil to the paper, and I made it write the word: “Yes.”

She didn’t turn. She kept her eyes fixed on the pencil and the paper.

“Harry,” she said. “I am so sorry, Harry, I’m so sorry for what I said to you. I’ve thought about it ever since, every second of every day. I’d do anything to undo it, Harry. I wish I could turn the clock back. I am so sorry, Harry. I am.”

And I made the pencil write:“ I know. I’m sorry, too, Eggy.”

The writing was like my writing when I was alive, only it was faint(unclear) and long and thin, like the legs of a spider. I didn’t have the mental strength somehow to put much pressure on the pencil. Just, making the pencil write and keeping it in the air was taking all the strength I had, and I didn’t know how whether I could hold it for much longer. I already felt exhausted, as if there wasn’t much me left.

I thought at the pencil, as hard as I ever could. And, you know, making that pencil move across the paper was the most difficult thing I’d done in my entire life.

“Forgive me, Eggy.” I wrote.

For a moment, she didn’t say anything, she just sat, staring at the words on the paper, but then she swallowed hard and said, “Of course I forgive you, Harry. Of course I do. Forgive me, too. Forgive me too, Harry. You know I didn’t mean it, don’t you? I was angry. I said a stupid thing. Forgive me, Harry. I love you.”

My strength had almost gone. I tried to force the pencil over the paper, to make it write down what I want to say. I tried, I really did try.

“I love you, too, Eg—”

And then the pencil fell before I could finish her name, and I couldn’t write any more.

“Harry, are you still there?” she turned and looked around the corner.

“Harry?”

And of course I was still there, but all my strength had gone. And there was no more that I could say to the living. And little use in them saying anything to me. And I felt that it was time for me to go now.

To go, and never to come back.

But I felt at peace at last. Sad and sorry, but at peace. I’d made up with Eggy, and that made me feel as if a great weight had been lifted from me. And I remembered our headmaster, Mr. Hallent, had said one year ago, “______________________________,” meaning that you should never go to sleep still hating someone, especially someone you loved, because one of you might not wake up in the morning. If so, you’d stuck with a whole big plateful of unfinished business, just like me.

55. The pencil stayed in the air because ______.

56. In Paragraph 4, Eggy neither screamed nor ran away because______.

57. Harry and Eggy were both ______ with (at) what they had done.

58. Which writing technique has not been adopted in the story?

59. The word undo in the underlined sentence can be replaced by ______.

60. Which saying can be put in the blank to convey Harry’s thought at the end of the story?

If you love listening to music, you’re in good company. Charles Darwin once remarked, “If I had my life to live over again, I would have made a rule to read some poetry and listen to some music at least once every week.” Recent research shows that listening to music improves our mental well-being and boosts our physical health in surprising and astonishing ways. Here are some amazing scientifically-proven benefits of being hooked on music.

61. __________ Research at Georgia Tech University showed that softening the light and music while people ate led them to consume fewer calories and enjoy their meals more. If you’re looking for ways to curb your appetite, try dimming the lights and listening to soft music the next time you sit down for a meal.

62. __________ Over 30% of Americans suffer from insomnia. A study showed that students who listened to relaxing classical music for 45 minutes before turning in slept significantly better than students who listened to an audiobook or did nothing different from their normal routine. If you’re having trouble sleeping, try listening to a little Bach or Mozart before bedtime to catch some Zs.

63. __________ Research proves that when you listen to music you like, your brain releases dopamine, a “feel-good” neurotransmitter. Valorie Salimpoor, a neuroscientist at McGill University, injected eight music-lovers with a radioactive substance that binds to dopamine receptors after they listened to their favorite music. A PET scan showed that large amounts of dopamine were released, which biologically caused the participants to feel emotions like happiness, excitement, and joy. So the next time you need an emotional boost, listen to your favourite tunes for 15 minutes. That’s all it takes to get a natural high!

64. __________ More than 350 million people suffer from depression around the world. A whopping 90% of them also experience insomnia. The sleep research above found that symptoms of depression decreased significantly in the group that listened to classical music before bedtime, but not in the other two groups. Another study by Hans Joachim Trappe in Germany also demonstrated that music can benefit patients with depressive symptoms, depending on the type of music. Meditative sounds and classical music lifted people up, but techno and heavy metal brought people down even more. The next time you feel low, put on some classical or meditative music to lift your spirits.

65. __________ Listening to music you enjoy decreases levels of the stress hormone cortisol in your body, which counteracts the effects of chronic stress. This is an important finding since stress causes 60% of all our illnesses and disease. One study showed that if people actively participated in making music by playing various percussion instruments and singing, their immune system was boosted even more than if they passively listened. To stay calm and healthy during a stressful day, turn on the radio. Be sure to sing along and tap your feet to the beat to get the maximum healing benefit.
